Braden and I are two medical residents living in Southern California. We were blessed to both match at Loma Linda University for our residencies. Braden is a PGY-1 orthopaedic surgery intern and I am a PGY-1 prelim medicine intern prior to starting my ophthalmology training.
During our time in medical school, like many other students, we jointly accrued student loan debt. In terms of transparency, our total combined debt is $500K+. As we start the next phase of our training, and have a salary for the first time as medical professionals, we are working to understand finances, budgeting, and planning for retirement. One personal financial goal is to become financially independent by our mid 40s (i.e. we do not have to work unless we want to). The first step in accomplishing this is being proactive about understanding our loans and different financial options available to us.
